Art Sunday 2017 – All Age 9 – 90 – working with labyrinths, geometry and free expression – so many of the older people had been told that they were ‘no good’ at art when at school and needed encouragement to join in.

Art sessions run in Mole Valley schools around the theme ‘A Room with a View’ inspired by title of E.M Forster book, which was written whilst the author was living locally.  The above photos are from the day that I was invited to run as part of Heritage Open Days 2015.

The aim of the sessions is to:

  • Increase sensory awareness, through Haptic (blindfolded) drawing
  • Liberate ways of expressing their ideas, through various plenary sessions and experimentation.
  • Encourage observational & interpretational skills, by thinking about how they would record key information about what they see and considering alternative ways of conveying this data.
  • Develop completed 2D or 3D work using a choice of collage, basic printing and painting.
  • To work individually or in pairs or groups.
  • Consider how the work should be curated for public display.

The following gives details of my experience to date with lots of photographic evidence.  The most important aspect of this work was the process; the way the children were able to interpret the themes presented themselves through a free exploration of materials provided and how they were encouraged to develop their own ideas.

Children’s Church Coordinator 2006 – 2011

Before completing my degree I was Children’s Church Co-ordinator (2006 – 2011), where I organised a programme of weekly events for local children. Together with a creative & committed crowd of volunteers, we transformed a traditional small Sunday School, into a vibrant collection of 6 groups spanning 0 to 18 years. I was responsible for planning activities, marketing, event management, equipment purchasing & resourcing.

“Art Start”

As part of the above I ran “Art Start”, a regular art programme for 4 to 13 year olds, planning activities and sourcing inspirational materials to fit the session’s theme.

Rejuven8 @ St John’s

I organised a monthly all age group session at our local chapel to include a much broader group of children, managing activities, marketing and the child protection procedures and running the arts and craft section.  These sessions pulled together the ideas and talents of an amazing group of creative and generous people.  We were particularly keen to include people of all ages in running these events from teenagers following the DOE award programme to senior members of our community.  I handed the leadership to Ellie Lister, before starting full-time at art school.
